Hawu!! Ubuntu

| August 1st, 2009

I have been a follower of Fedora and loved to see it evolving from “No drivers for VGA card” to “No drivers for wireless card”. Inspite going through these issues and suggested switch to Ubuntu by my colleague, Amit, I wanted to do Fedora Desktop on the new laptop from DELL. I have to agree that “Fedora has YET not evolved”. The Fedora 11 Live CD installation crashes while trying to partition!! Heck that used to happen in Fedora Core 4.
Regressions happen, but of these sorts? Then I downloaded the Ubuntu Desktop and it installed in a breeze. I was astound with the options it had to offer!!

1. Copy your desktop!!
2. Copy your email and browser settings!!
3. Set hardware clock!!
And NO SELinux!!

I am not fan of desktops, but it is interesting to know that someone thought about a small inconvenience to common-man.
Once through I had to Google certain drivers and workarounds, since Ubuntu has no mp3 decoders, no drivers for IHC9 Intel HD Audio. With so many Ubuntu Enthusiasts on the web, it was a cinch.

And to talk about the freebies, it comes with
1. Rythmbox – No need to download a 74MB iTunes every month
2. Ekiga – As of now it is just a SIP softphone. I expect it to become alternative Skype
3. Pidgin – All messengers clubbed into one.
4. Open Office – I do not like the interface, so I do not use it. Google Documents are much better and easy to use. In the worst case, I will switch to my Windows Vista and use MS Office.
